HISTORY OF MOCHIGASE TEA

　今から１２００年前の平安時代に用瀬のまちに弘法大師さまが訪れました。そのとき、用瀬のおばあさんはお茶を大師さまに振舞いました。大師さまは大変このお茶を気に入られ、「このお茶はどこのお茶か」とおばあさんに尋ねました。そう訊かれ、おばあさんは庭先に生えている茶の木を指差しました。すると、大師さまは持っていた茶の実を庭にまき「この地は、お茶を作るのに良い場所だ」と仰ったそうです。以来、用瀬の地ではお茶の栽培が盛んに行われるようになりました。

　それから、江戸時代に入ると、用瀬の地域は上方往来（参勤交代）の通り道となり、宿場町としてにぎわいました。しかし、用瀬茶はあくまでも売り物ではなく、自分で育て自分で消費する作物と言う位置づけでした。

　そんななか、用瀬に住むとある男が１８５０年ごろに用瀬茶に目をつけて、それで用瀬を活性化しようと考えました。その男の名前は亀屋四郎三郎（かめやしろうさぶろう）です。そして彼は１８５３年に京都宇治から茶師を招いて商売としての製茶を本格的に開始しました。製茶産業は順調に進み、１８５５年には亀田屋茶店が開業します。また、１８６８年には５０人体制の製茶工場を建設し茶の生産規模はますます拡大していきました。１８７２年には黒字を出して茶産業は用瀬で重要な立ち位置となったのです。そして更に勢いをつけようと四郎三郎は神戸港より用瀬茶の輸出を行いました。

……しかし、貿易は大失敗。１８７４年に四郎三郎は家財が傾くほどに負債を背負ってしまいます。それでも周りの茶業者は四郎三郎を信じ、製茶産業は２０戸程まで増えました。

　その最中、国からの意向で紅茶を栽培する事が奨励されました。しかしながら、用瀬茶は紅茶に生まれ変わる事を断念しました。

　結果、用瀬茶は他地域との競争に敗れて次第に産業としては下火になっていきます。こうして今では、用瀬茶を生産・販売している製茶業者は私ども「三角園」のみとなりました。それでも、亀屋の情熱を受け継ぎ、全ての「用瀬茶」が無農薬・有機栽培で江戸時代より変わらぬお茶を提供し続けている事につきましては、他の産地の銘茶には真似できない強みと私どもは自負しております。「亀屋の情熱、用瀬茶に生きる」

And he invited tea ceremony from Uji in Kyoto in 1853 and started the tea industry in earnest. The tea industry progressed steadily, and in 1868 expanded to the point of constructing a tea factory with 50 people. In order to make further momentum, Mr.Kameya has exported tea tea from Kobe port. However, trade was a big failure. In the meantime, it was encouraged to grow tea by the government's intention. However, Mochigase tea did not change to black tea.As a result, Mochigase tea loses production competition. In this way, now, the tea making company that produces and sells tea tea has become "Misumi-Yen" only.
